DISCUSSION OF RELATED CONCEPTS

We will share to you words that you might encounter for the first time. First word is thespian. Thespian is a technical term for theater actors. We four are thespians. We are very proud of it. Second word is the acting area or in simple words the playing area or in simple words the stage. This is our stage. Third word is blackout.  What happens when we have brownouts? Electricity is gone. No electricity means there is no lights. Blackout means dimming or turning off the lights. Final word is blocking. In theater, blocking means actor positions. There are four basic blocking positions. These are upstage, downstage, right stage and left stage. Always remember that we always use the actor’s point of view and not of the audience.

TRANSCRIPT

What is Performing Arts?

Direk Rahyan: Uhm, it talks about ano eh, when you say Performing Arts, it’s a variety of, we talk about creative arts.  So when we talk about creative arts, there’s body and movements, there’s spontaneous improvisations, there’s the art of acting, the art voice acting, anything to do with performance, that’s Performing Arts.

How does performing arts helps boost an individual's confidence?

Direk Rahyan: Ahh, ano yan eh, It builts up your personality. It gives you a sense of a wholeness kasi, bakit? There are two instrument of actors, the body and the voice. So meaning if you have any problem in getting out of your nutshell, Performing Arts is one of the best area to get you out of your nutshell, to get you out of the comfort zone.

What is performing arts' relation to reality?

Direk Rahyan: Reality, it depicts life. It depicts, it mirrors everyday life that we do. That’s performing arts. That’s the reason why kapag nag te-theater tayo, people react because of the behaviour of the actors, kasi the behaviours coming from real life.

What are the things an actor should have to be a great performer?

Direk Rahyan: I think yung the tool that I’m teaching. For you to be a great performer you need to put “karga” you need to put “substitution” One, it makes you real, it gives you, it grounded you as a person, it gives you a sense of reality.

What are the advantages a person can get in taking performing arts?

Direk Rahyan: Kumakapal ang mukha mo, marunong kang makisama, nagkakaroon ka ng mga interesting choices sa buhay. Dala dala mo yun eh. When you say interesting choices, not just choices in terms of acting, in terms of being, it makes you, nandun yung 10 rules of spontaneous improv, you’re always saying yes, you’re not blocking, you’re not hedging, and you’re not thinking twice, you believe in what you do. I think that’s the most important thing, it gives you a sense of believing in what you do.

CONCLUSION

The world of performing arts isn’t just limited to the stage but all lessons learned are also the basics of reality such as self-confidence, focus and concentration. These concepts of the stage are very helpful in everything we do. I mean who can give us an activity that doesn’t require self-confidence, focus and concentration? Always remember the golden rule of performing which I know you can use, “Always say YES!” Whenever problems come our way, always remember what we taught you, “Always say YES!” Say yes to the problems because if you don’t they will just eat you alive but if you have self-confidence, focus and concentration, there will be no problems you cannot face. Like we said earlier, performing has a close relationship with reality. It enhances your skills in performing and at the same time develops your values of self-confidence, focus and concentration. Again we are Kuya Dhan Dhan Alcalde, Ate Denden Tenorio, Ate Yanyan Umipig and Ate Samsam Santos. Goodbye and God Bless! Thank you!
